Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is famous for its significant deposits of native copper ore, which is pure, uncombined copper found in its natural metallic state. This area, known as "Copper Country" has the world's largest deposits of this type of copper. Native Americans mined copper here thousands of years ago, and commercial mining began in the 1840s, making it a major copper producer. The copper is found within the Portage Lake Lava Series, specifically in lava flows and conglomerates.

Each specimen is mostly flat – one side is beautifully polished to show off the copper’s shine, while the opposite side remains unpolished.
